A Slightly More Grown-Up Social Networking Site

I've never liked MySpace, for multiple reasons. It's horrible to look at, horribly coded, and feels vaguely like some puritan's apocalyptic vision of a society rapidly decomposing into a pile of maggoty fecal matter. That, of course, is just my opinion.

So when someone invited me to join Facebook the other day, I was hesitant - aren't all of these social sites pretty much the same? Apparently not.

I'm really enjoying facebook: from the start, the site is simple, elegant, fast, and reliable. With features like the Wall (the commenting area on your profile), and the tracking of your friends changes, you feel much more connected than on MySpace. When a friend changes their status, comments on photos, or adds new people to their friends lists, its pretty damn easy to see; in a month or so, I've caught up with people who I haven't thought about in ages, and I didn't go searching for them: the connection phase came about through the actions of those already within my circle.

Privacy issues have really been thought through, too; it's possible to manage your security and visibility at a pretty granular level, for each area in which your profile could be viewed.

But what's grabbed me over the last few days has been their Open Source releases. Primarily because it means that, wow, these guys have actually hired, like, real programmers! One of the projects is PHPSH, a Python-like interactive shell for PHP, featuring things like command completion, easy introspection, in-shell documentation and all the other features we've got used to in iPython. This is bloody brilliant. I hope to never return to PHP as a development platform, but if I'm forced into it, this gets installed straight after emacs' php-mode.

The other interesting project which has just gone Open Source is Thrift, which I can't say too much about, as it scared me slightly. Apparently it's a platform for multi-language code generation from definition files, supposedly to do service-oriented development across those languages. I've done some code-gen evil myself before, and god it's fun. And evil. And very seldom a good idea. So I'll leave examining that to a day when I'm FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT OF SATAN! Or just really bored.

In summary: get a damn Facebook account. And add me as a friend! I always need new friends.
